Technical Meeting

Join us on May 8th for a presentation by Dr. Tanya Wattenburg Komas, Director of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program at California State University, Chico, and Founder of the Preservation Field School at Alcatraz Island. The presentation features two unique projects that highlight recent advances in concrete evaluation and repair at two important historic sites.

Historic Concrete Investigations at Pointe du Hoc, Normandy, France
This presentation will briefly cover the military history and the cliff stabilization effort that included concrete micro-piles, soil-nailing, shotcrete, and decorative concrete finishes. It more detail, it will showcase the advanced testing methods employed on the bunkers by Chico State and their findings to date. It will also address the precarious future outlook for the site through an emotional journey back through time and quickly forward through recent technological advances in concrete preservation.

Chico State CIM Summer Field School, Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, California
This presentation will address the philosophical approach and technical details of the materials, means, and methods that the Field School has combined to produce professional-quality repairs in the context of careful attention to historic significance and appropriate repair aesthetics. This together with the moving human side of the Field School program that is aimed at training the next generation of concrete repair professionals while they “save the rock” makes for an educational and inspiring presentation.
